The new darling of the Brit rock media is a soon to be 26-year old folkie from Nevada City, California named Alela Diane. The quality of her voice has people comparing her to Joanna Newsom and Vashti Bunyan. Her songwriting has some of Newsom’s angular qualities, but her voice reminds me more of Natalie Merchant (save for the accent — as endearing or irritating as it is, depending on your tastes). I’m notoriously picky about the singer/songwriters who get my thumbs up, but I find her stuff enjoyable.

She’s living in Portland these days, quickly becoming the new hotbed of activity for folkies…maybe I’ll get to see her sometime soon.
