Cool Purple Mix: The Violet Lights, Johnny Jones And The King Casuals and John Vanderslice

What form! What energy! Have you ever seen someone recline with such workmanlike precision? I should think not! Inspired by Kim Kardashian, hard at work displaying purple in just the right light, I’ve scanned the globe for three perfectly purple pieces of music.

The Violet Lights are a band out of Southern California, who invested their hard earned money into recording a five song EP at LA’s famous Sunset Sound. It’s an excellent record entitled Sex And Sound (coincidentally two of my favorite things, along with soft fuzzy kittens and warm woolen woolen mittens).

Listen to it then go buy it. Here’s band member Amber Garvey, channeling a little platinum into her violet life.

The King Casuals were founded in 1962 in Clarksville, Tennessee, by Billy Cox and a guitar-playing fellow named Jimi Hendrix. After said guitar player went on to bigger things and better drugs, Chicago bluesman Johnny Jones returned to his Southern home to take over leadership of the band. This version of Jimi’s song got heavy spins in the London R&B clubs of the late 60s and early 70s.

Here’s another picture of Kim working the fabric.

For those of you who are concerned about the lack of men represented on this page — and the presumed sexism of same — here’s a picture of a guy in a purple Speedo.

Even the girls have to admit Kim looks a lot better sporting the spandex. Now back to our regularly scheduled tasteless lechery.

John Vanderslice is a Florida-born, Maryland-raised, San Francisco based performer and producer. He’s released a dozen albums since 2000, including Mass Suicide Occult Figurines, which included the cut, “Bill Gates Must Die.” When he tried to release the record package like a Windows installation disc, things got a little sticky over in legal.

He’s also the founder of San Fran studio Tiny Telephone, which has hosted session by Death Cab For Cutie, Okkervil River, Deerhoof, Spoon and the Mountain Goats (the last two of which he’s produced).

“Cool Purple Mist” is like the cool, refreshing aura that surrounds Kim Kardashian every day, in every way.
