Number 1 With A Bullet: Ringo Starr’s “Photograph”

Fusion 45 November 1, 2012 0

The recording of Ringo’s first #1 hit happened in a stealthy manner. With the former Beatles drummer and producer Richard Perry in the US for a Grammy ceremony in Nashville, Ringo decided it would be a good idea to make some music during his trip.

“Listen, I’m not going to Nashville just for the Grammy Awards,” Ringo’s is quoted as saying in The Billboard Book of Number One Hits. “Let’s go in (to the studio) and see what happens.”

Decamping to L.A. without the knowledge of his label’s bean counters, Ringo and an entourage that included George Harrison and John Lennon recorded his next three hit songs: “Oh My My,” “You’re Sixteen,” and, with Harrison on 12-string, “Photograph.”

Debuting at #74 on the Hot 100, “Photograph” reached #1 in November 1973.
