The Toot Uncommons were actually members of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. They were on the record but weren’t part of Saturday Night Live‘s most expensive production to date when Martin asked to perform the show live on April 22, 1978.
The single was released the following week, sold more than a million copies and peaked at #17 on the pop chart in August.
